In view of the approaching 2025 local government elections, all of Sri Lanka’s schools will be closed on May 05 and 06.
The Education Ministry states that on May 7th, schools should begin their regular academic operations.
The action responds to an Election Commission demand to count centers, distribute ballot boxes, and distribute other election-related items on school grounds as polling sites.
According to the circular, schools used as polling sites have to be turned over to Grama Niladharis by May 04 and ready with desks, chairs, hallways, and required utilities. The circular directs directors of education and principals to coordinate accordingly.
As stated in the official directions, institutions asked for post-school hours may still be used for election purposes even after regular school hours have been resumed.
